For Brands & Importers
US Bicycle Safety Standard: 16 CFR Part 1512 Explained

The US market has its own rulebook. For human-powered bicycles, that rulebook is 16 CFR Part 1512 - the federal safety standard enforced by the CPSC. This guide covers what it means for an importer and what documentation follows.
What 16 CFR 1512 covers
Part 1512 sets requirements for the parts that keep a bike safe to ride: brakes, steering, wheels, frame, fork and required reflective devices. Bikes sold in the US are expected to meet these requirements and be backed by test evidence.
The General Certificate of Conformity (GCC)
Based on the tests, the importer or private-label brand issues a General Certificate of Conformity stating the bike conforms to 16 CFR Part 1512. The GCC travels with the shipment and should reference the specific model and test basis.
CPSC importer registration
Brands and importers placing bikes on the US market register with the CPSC and keep their contact details current. Treat this as a standing obligation, the same way an EU brand keeps an EU Responsible Person - it is part of being a compliant US seller, not a one-off.
What MEIRX does for US-bound bikes
We build CPSC-aligned bikes for the US market and support the documentation that goes with a 16 CFR 1512 brief - the GCC basis, the model match and any market-specific notes. We can work with SGS, TÜV, BV or an inspector you name for third-party verification. See our Certifications page or open an OEM / ODM brief.
This is a practical overview, not legal advice. Confirm the current CPSC requirements and registration steps with your US importer of record or compliance counsel.
