Importing Bicycles to the EU: Documents & Requirements

Bringing bicycles into the European Union is mostly a paperwork discipline. Get the documents right and the container clears; get them wrong and it sits at the port. Here is the importer checklist we walk every EU partner through.

1. The conformity documents

Before shipping, you need the EU Declaration of Conformity and the test reports behind it, built on the EN ISO 4210 safety series. These are the backbone of CE marking - without them, the mark on the bike is meaningless.

2. An EU Responsible Person (GPSR)

Since December 2024, the General Product Safety Regulation requires non-EU brands to name an EU Responsible Person whose name and address appear on the product and in the documentation. This is now a standard line item in any EU bicycle brief - plan for it alongside the CE file, not after.

3. Substance controls: RoHS and REACH

  • RoHS - restricts hazardous substances in the bike and its components (relevant for EU-bound shipments).
  • REACH - covers registered chemicals, including substances in paints, coatings and metal treatments. Your supplier should be able to confirm the scope for the models you import.

4. Customs paperwork

Alongside the compliance file, customs expects the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and the correct commodity code for bicycles. Keep the conformity documents in the same handover so your forwarder is not chasing them at the border.

Where MEIRX fits

We build to ISO 4210, control substances per RoHS, and support the CE documentation for the European market - sharing valid certificates and test reports with verified partners on request. We can also coordinate with SGS, TÜV, BV or an inspector you name. Start from our Certifications page or open an OEM / ODM brief.

This is a practical overview, not legal advice. Confirm the current HS code, REACH scope and GPSR duties with your customs broker and compliance counsel.
