Aluminum vs Carbon Mountain Bike Frame: OEM Cost & Durability

Frame material sets the price, the weight and the durability story of the bike you sell. For a brand planning volume, the aluminum vs carbon choice is mostly a business decision, not just a weight one.
Aluminum (6061-T6)
Aluminum is the workhorse. It is stiff, corrosion-resistant, easy to weld and cheap to produce at scale. For trail hardtails and most OEM programs, it is the right call: the per-bike cost stays sane and the frame survives real-world abuse.
Carbon fiber
Carbon is lighter and can be tuned for ride feel, but it costs far more per frame and needs mold investment. It suits premium, lower-volume lines where weight is the selling point - not a first container.
The OEM cost view
| Factor | Aluminum | Carbon |
|---|---|---|
| Per-bike cost | Low | High |
| Tooling | Weld jigs | Molds (higher) |
| Durability | High, repairable | Good, harder to repair |
| Best use | Volume OEM / first run | Premium line |
