27.5 vs 29 Mountain Bike: Which Wheel Size for Your Brand?

Wheel size is the single biggest lever on how a mountain bike rides and who it fits. If you are specifying bikes for a brand or a region, the 27.5 vs 29 decision is worth getting right before tooling and paint batches are set.
What 29 inch does well
A 29 inch wheel rolls over roots, rocks and rough ground with less effort. It carries speed, smooths chatter and suits cross-country and fast trail riding. The trade-off is a slightly longer, less flickable bike that can feel large for shorter riders.
What 27.5 inch does well
A 27.5 inch wheel is more agile, easier to accelerate and more forgiving in tight, technical terrain. It also fits a wider range of rider heights in a shorter frame. For a first trail hardtail or a youth-oriented line, 27.5 inch is the practical default.
How brands should choose
- Cross-country / speed market: lean 29 inch.
- Trail, entry and youth: lean 27.5 inch.
- Not sure: 27.5 inch covers the most buyers on a first run.
