1x vs 2x Drivetrain: Which for Your Mountain Bike Line

The drivetrain decides how many gears you have and how much you maintain. For a brand speccing a line, 1x versus 2x is a positioning call as much as a mechanical one.

1x - one chainring, wide cassette

A single front ring with a wide-range cassette. Fewer parts, no front derailleur, easier to keep clean and shifting. This is the modern default for trail and entry bikes.

2x - two chainrings, more range

Two front rings give a wider gear spread for long climbs and fast descents on mixed terrain. The trade-off is a front derailleur to maintain and a slightly heavier, busier cockpit.
